John W. Moran Jr., 78

Salem, NH — John W. Moran Jr., 78, of Salem, N.H., died on Thursday, at Elliot Hospital, Manchester, N.H. He was born in Panama City, Panama, and was the son of the late John W. Sr. and Arlene (McDonald) Moran. He moved to Manchester, N.H., at the age of 10, where he grew up and attended schools, and graduated from Bishop Brady High School.

John followed in his father's and grandfather's footsteps and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served 20 years as a Master Sergeant, and was in the Korean War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his service to his country, John worked for Champagnes in Manchester, N.H., which became Grand Union Store. He worked for Supervalu, which became Sweetlife Foods, which he retired from. During his retirement, John worked for Campbell’s Scottish Highlands in Salem. John was named Father of the Year in 1973 by the Lawrence Eagle Tribune. That’s the year John graduated from college, the same year his oldest son graduated from high school. John enjoyed golfing, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his family.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane (Jackson) Moran of Salem; his children, Kevin Moran of Salem, Karen and her husband, T.C. Freeman of San Antonio, Texas, Susan and her husband, Dennis O’Brien of Salem, Mark and his wife, Colleen Moran of Salem, Kathy Lou Moran of Naples, Fla., and John and his wife, Heather Moran of Salem; his brother, James Moran of Nashua, N.H.; 18 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews

ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 18, at 10 a.m., at St. Matthew Church, Windham, N.H. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, N.H. Calling hours will be on Monday, Februaary 17, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem.
