North Andover — A heart of gold stopped beating. David William "Gramps" Ritchie Sr., 93, of North Andover, Mass., and formerly of McCabe Court, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at the Sutton Hill Nursing Home in North Andover.
David was loved and cherished by his entire family. He was born in Lawrence, Mass., to Henrietta Ritchie (Hill), of Canada and Peter Ritchie, of Scotland. He attended North Andover’s Johnson High School, graduating in 1940, and then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
David was a devoted husband and father of two sons, David and Paul. Upon his return from the war, he moved to North Andover with his bride, Barbara Smart of Revere, Mass. Barbara and David were married for 49 years until she passed away in 1995.
David worked many jobs in his lifetime, but is fondly remembered as a Glennie’s Milkman, servicing most of Andover with a smiling face and always a "Good morning."
David purchased a house in New Hampshire that was to be torn down and relocated it, board by board, to Groton, Mass., where his passion for fishing for trout with his boys held some of his fondest memories. For reasons still unknown, he loved to read Western paperbacks.
He loved to play golf with his friends and family and played right up until he was 91. David managed to live a long life without "really being old."
Gramps is survived by, and will be deeply missed by his two sons, David Ritchie Jr. of Laconia, N.H., and Paul Ritchie of Manchester, N.H.; along with seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
David was a lifelong member of the Cochichewick Masonic Lodge in North Andover.
