Highland Beach, FL, and Marblehead, MA — Richard Sherman, 93, of Highland Beach, Fla., and Marblehead, Mass., passed away peacefully on June 12, 2014, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Florida.
Born on April 21, 1921, in Rochester, N.Y., Richard was the son of Inez and Hyman Sherman of Haverhill, Mass., and for 67 years, the devoted husband of Frances (Dorff) Sherman. He was the beloved father of Stephen of Needham, Jonathan of New Haven, Conn., Melissa O'Mara of West Hartford, Conn., and Susan Welch of Andover. He was an adoring and generous grandfather to Joseph and Rebecca Sherman, Elise, Cayla and Joshua O'Mara, and Amy Welch; and a great-grandfather to Eli O'Mara. He was a loving brother to Barbara Shamesman of Palm Beach, Fla., and Hampton Beach, N.H., and Donald of Boynton Beach, Fla.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Richard was decorated for his service in North Africa, Italy and France during World War II.
He was an influential figure in the field of financial planning, and a leader in New England's financial investment community, retiring as a vice president of American Express. He was a member of the Masons and an avid yachtsman with a deep, lifelong love of the ocean. His tremendous optimism and strength were inspirations to all who knew him.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service on Monday, June 16, at 11 a.m., at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill. Interment with military honors will follow in the Children of Israel Cemetery, Haverhill. A Memorial Observance will be held immediately following the interment on Monday, until 5 p.m., and then from 7 to 9 p.m., and also on Tuesday, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., at his son Stephen's home.
