Methuen, MA — Judith M. Busta, 80, of Methuen, passed away Sunday, June 22, at her home in Methuen. She was the daughter of Robert and Mildred (Butterworth) Barnett, and for 49 years, the wife of Walter L. Busta, who passed away in 2003.
She grew up in Lawrence and attended Lawrence Public Schools. Inspired by her Sunday School teacher, Rachel, Judith’s great love of reading was fostered in the Lawrence Public Library. Judith’s avid devotion to the written novel and high regard for education were her legacy to her children and grandchildren.
As a teenager, Judith volunteered as a candy striper for Lawrence General Hospital, where she developed an interest in the nursing field. Judith would later go on to work as a nurse’s aid in area nursing homes, where she found a great sense of fulfillment caring for others.
In 1954, Judith married Walter L. Busta and moved to her home in Methuen, where she raised her family and would reside for the next 60 years. Along with escaping in a great novel, Judith enjoyed crossword puzzles, shopping, going out to lunch with her daughters, and an occasional “Girls Night Out” with her sisters and niece, Audrey.
In the early years of their marriage, Judith and Walter’s home in Methuen was the most desired spot for many a cookout and family gathering. There didn’t need to be a special occasion for her sisters, brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews to feel welcome. The special times spent with her brother, Bob, both in her youth and as an adult, along with their older sister, Bella, created some of her fondest memories.
Judith always looked forward to spending time with her family, enjoying holidays, birthdays and special occasions, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by daughters, Maureen and her husband, William VanSchalkwyk of Groton, Mass., and their children, Robert of Groton, and Daniel and his wife, Juile, of Charlestown, Mass., Norma and her husband, Frank Tridenti and their children, Meredith, Michael and Sara of Derry, N.H., and Judith and her husband, Kevin LaRiviere of Sandown, N.H.; sisters, Muriel Keraghan of Atkinson, N.H., Mildred Driscoll of Lawrence, Mass., and Mary Naylor of Methuen; as well as several caring brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
