Leo F. Grillo Sr., 90


Methuen — Leo F. Grillo Sr., 90, a longtime resident of Methuen, Mass., passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Leo was born in Lawrence, Mass., on October 8, 1923. He was the son of the late Chiarina (Pica) Grillo and Pasquale Grillo.

Leo grew up in Lawrence, and attended Saint Mary's Grammar School. He was a 1941 graduate of Lawrence High School. At the start of World War II, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Leo earned the rank of Tech Sargeant while serving in the Red Diamond Division. During a "rest and relaxation" leave from the Army, Leo met Carmela DeLucia. They were married on June 8, 1947.

Leo and (Carmela) "Nellie" built a home in Methuen in 1953, and have lived there since. He worked for many years at Lawrence Maid Footwear and Vertipile Industries in Lowell. They raised their five children in their happy home. Leo was a parishioner of Saint Monica's Church in Methuen.

Leo is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Carmela (DeLucia); his children, Leo F. Grillo Jr. of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Robert J. Grillo and his wife, Debbie, of Amherst, N.H., Marie (Grillo) Caruso and her husband, Joe, of West Newton, Mass., Patricia (Grillo) Holland and her husband, James, of Salem, N.H., and Darlene (Grillo) Peters and her husband, Gary, of Londonderry, N.H.; and loving niece, Claire Campagnone. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; cousins; and his cat, Noel.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, January 20, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, January 21, at St. Monica’s Church, 214 Lawrence St., Methuen. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence.
