Edward C. Downer, 72

Haverhill — Edward C. Downer, 72, of Delray Beach, Florida, formerly of Haverhill, died Sunday, February 2, at the home of his son in Bradford after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in West Newbury, he was the son of the late Scott E. and Mildred (Currier) Downer. Raised in Amesbury, he attended Amesbury public schools and was a graduate of Amesbury High School, class of 1960. A Vietnam Veteran, he proudly served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1965.

Mr. Downer was employed as a layout operator for Western Electric in North Andover for twenty-eight years, retiring in 1987. During his career, Mr. Downer served as Union Steward for his coworkers. His memberships included the Telephone Pioneers of America, and the Garibaldi Club.

He met and married the love of his life in 1964, Diane M. (Cote), together they shared fifty years and for the past ten years they enjoyed living as snowbirds in Florida. One year ago they made Delray Beach, Florida their permanent home until his illness brought him back to Haverhill to be near his family. Mr. Downer made the best of his lengthy retirement and cherished his time spent with his family. The consummate optimist, if you asked how he was, he’d simply reply, “Awesome.” He enjoyed friendly card games, and his Red Sox.
