Leonard F. Smith Sr., 69

Methuen — Leonard F Smith Sr., 69, of Methuen, Mass., passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 23, 2014.

Born in Lawrence and a graduate of Lawrence High School, he was a proud member of the undefeated Lawrence football team of 1962, that was rewarded with a visit to the White House. He worked as a time keeper at Davis and Furber for 18 years, and 20 years as a security guard for Raytheon Corporation.

Married to the love of his life, Irene (Holbrook) Smith, for 41 years, together they proudly raised seven children. His love for children showed in everything Leonard did; he was a foster parent for over eight years, and dedicated his time to the Lawrence Central Little League Baseball Association, where he provided 38 years of coaching, managing and mentoring baseball and softball teams. He coached all seven of his children, and a few of his grandson's baseball and softball teams, as well as coaching Lawrence Pop Warner football. After reluctantly retiring from coaching, he enjoyed attending any and all of his grandchildren's sporting and musical events.

Leonard enjoyed many activities such as bowling, canoeing, camping, and taking long drives with his family. Leonard was a proud lifetime member of the BPO Elks of Lawrence.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Irene Smith, their children Bruce Baker and his wife, Marianne, Douglas Baker and his wife, Darlene, James Baker, Leonard F. Smith Jr., Tammy Smith and Erika Smith, all of Methuen, and his daughter, Robin McConnell and her husband, Steven, of Dracut, Mass.; his 15 grandchildren, Nicholas, David, John, Shawn, Steven Coombs, Douglas Jr., Andrea, Christopher, Victoria, Devin, Mackenzie, Katrina, Steven Leonard, Alexander, and Madeline; and his beloved yellow Lab "Duke." He also leaves behind his siblings, Phillip Smith of Salem, N.H., Elaine Napoli of Salem, and Charles Smith of Lawrence; as well as nieces and nephews, whom he loved. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Smith.
