Elsa M. (Grassi) Basso

Haverhill — Elsa M. (Grassi) Basso passed away on Monday, February 24, 2014. She was born in Haverhill on August 22, 1929, and was the daughter of Angelina (Mori) and Oreste Grassi. A Haverhill resident for most of her life, she had lived in Atkinson, N.H., for the past 26 years.

Elsa was a vivacious, gracious, and enthusiastic woman, who loved people. She nurtured lifelong friendships with neighbors and with classmates from Haverhill schools and Boston University. She graduated with Haverhill High School, Class of 1947, and served on the loyal class reunion committee for over 60 years. For many years, she was a member of Haverhill’s City Club and Sacred Hearts Parish.

In 1949, Elsa married Robert Basso, whom she had known since her days at Wood School. During the early years of their marriage, she enjoyed her jobs in the clerk’s office at Haverhill City Hall and at Basso Insurance Agency. Always dedicated to her husband and four children, she was a tireless homemaker, a talented cook, a voracious reader, and a master of crocheting.

After her children had grown, Elsa enjoyed traveling and dining out with her husband and with her sisters. Trips to National Parks, the West Coast, and U.S. historic sites gave her many fond memories. She especially loved her vacations in Italy, where she toured cities and visited the villages where her parents had been born.

Above all, Elsa adored family and delighted in many years of family filled celebrations and holidays. She is survived by daughters, Christine Fischer and her husband, Jerry, of New London, Conn., and Patricia Bryan and her husband, Kenneth, of Winchester; sons, Robert R. Basso Jr. and his wife, Kristen, of Amesbury, and Michael T. Basso and his wife, Jacki, of Salisbury. She leaves six grandchildren, Ilana and Gabriel Fischer, Joseph and John Bryan, and Robert III and Charlotte Basso; and one great-grandson, Matteo Schapiro. She is also survived by her sister, Irma Pasquale of Haverhill; and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Elsa was predeceased by Bob, her husband of 62 years; and by her sister, Vera Sanviti.
