Haverhill, MA — William Norris "Norry" Rogers, 90, longtime Haverhill resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, March 2, 2014, at Wingate at Haverhill, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Norma C. (Benoit) Rogers, who passed away in 2010.
Born in Haverhill on May 26, 1923, he was one of four sons of the late Joseph Angus and Lillian (McGaughey) Rogers. He was a graduate of St. James High School, Class of 1942, where he was a quarterback of the Championship St. James Football Team.
During World War II, Mr. Rogers proudly served with the United States Navy.
His working career started as a Police Officer with the Haverhill Police Department, along with his three brothers. He also worked as the night editor of the former Haverhill Journal, and had also worked at the Union Leader. After that, he worked for the Department of Environmental Management at the Salisbury Beach Reservation, until his retirement. In his retirement, he worked an additional 15 years as a valued staff member of the Paul Rogers Family Funeral Homes in Amesbury, Haverhill, Merrimac, and Newburyport. He enjoyed his years as a Newburyport resident during that time.
He always looked forward to his twice-a-year trips to Prince Edward Island, home of both of his parents, widely scattered with cousins from one end of the island to the other. Norry was an avid reader and lifelong follower of the Howie Carr Show.
Left behind to carry forward the legacy of his life are his three children, Michael N. Rogers and wife, Therese, of Haverhill, Stephen J. Rogers and wife, Annmarie, of Haverhill, and Patricia A. Delisle and husband, Mark, of Dracut, with whom he resided several years prior to becoming a resident at Wingate at Haverhill. He was also the proud grandfather of Cavan Delisle of Dracut, Meghan Campbell and husband, Brian, of Billerica, Andrew and Nicole Rogers of Haverhill, and Glen Chase and wife, Christine, of Pelham, N.H.; and great-grandfather of Campbell, and Caden Chase and Liam Campbell. He is additionally survived by his brother, F.Carl Rogers and wife, Gloria, of Atkinson, N.H.; and his sister-in-law, Mary Rogers of Andover; along with several generations of nieces, nephews, cousins; and dear friends, all of whom will forever cherish the wonderful memories they have of him. Norry was predeceased by his brothers, Homer A. Rogers and James A. “Junior” Rogers.
ARRANGEMENTS: Services and interment in St. James Cemetery, Haverhill, will be private for the family, and there will be no visiting hours.
