Portland, Maine — Joseph Nunes Herdade, 95, of Salem, N.H., died June 15.
Joseph was born in Brazil and raised in Newark, N.J., after his family emigrated from Portugal. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an engineer with Raytheon Service Co., and upon retiring in his 70s, he enjoyed gardening, yard and barn work at the house, reading, PBS programming, classical music, art, politics, history, and sports. In recent years, he was a resident of the Osher Inn of Portland, Maine.
He is predeceased by his first wife, Mildred (Stevens), and second wife, Mary Elizabeth (Hunter).
Surviving are his daughters, Carol Maya Ellis of Salem, N.H., and Elizabeth Herdade of Hampton, N.H.; sons Lawrence Herdade and his wife, Nancy Timberlake of Portland, Maine, and Lt. Colonel Joseph Herdade and his wife Sarah, of Rolla, Mo. He leaves five grandchildren, Amber, Jackson, Brooklyn, Maxwell, and Natalie Herdade. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Olga Herdade of Fanwood, N.J., and several nieces and nephews across the country.
