George W. Dyer, 90


Methuen — George W. Dyer, 90, long-time resident of Methuen, died peacefully at his home on Monday, December 10, 2012. George, son of the late Ernest and Edith (Strout), was born in South Portland, Maine on March 12, 1922.

He was a graduate of South Portland High and attended Hebron Academy. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army, 193rd Field Artillery Battalion, 18th Airborne Corps, serving in the European, African and Middle East Theater Campaigns and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal before his discharge in 1946.

George was employed as a welder for New England Shipbuilding Corp. and played professional baseball in South Portland, Maine prior to serving in the military. He attended Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute in Laurel, Md. and was a dry cleaning equipment salesman for many years. He then opened Kleanerette Cleaners in Methuen and operated it until his retirement in 1977.

George married the love of his life, Betty L. (Griffin) in June 1942. Betty pre-deceased him just after their 51st wedding anniversary in July 1993. George was a generous, kind-hearted and well-respected businessman in the community. He was a member of the John Hancock Lodge and served as Master in 1975. He loved bowling and was an avid golfer. George was a member of Merrimack Valley Country Club for many years.

George will be deeply missed by his three sons and their wives, Ronald and Jean of Virginia Beach, Va., Richard and JoAnne of Chesterville, Maine, and Steve and Jane Dyer of Bethlehem, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Melissa McLallen, Marc Dyer, Jason Dyer, Richard Dyer, Timothy Dyer, Michael Dyer, Amy Szymanski, and Adam Dyer and 13 great-grandchildren.

ARRANGEMENTS: Friends are invited to call from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 16 at the Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen. A Masonic Service will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery with Military Honors.
