N. Andover — John Patrick Meehan died Monday evening, February 11, in his home in North Andover, at the age of 90. He recently mourned the loss of his wife of 64 years, June Meehan.
Together they raised seven children, Rosemary Tator of Arlington, Jack Meehan of Jefferson, Maine, Junemarie Gabriel of Epping, N.H., Maureen Meehan of Andover, Michael Meehan of Winchester, Theresa Meehan of Lincoln, and Colleen Haynes of North Reading. John will be dearly missed by his daughters-in-law, Adrienne and Beatrice; his son-in-law, Bob; his 11 loving grandchildren and their spouses, Dennis and Marissa Meehan, Angel and Ian Jackson, Meghan and Matt Durkee, Stacey Gabriel, Shalei Holway, Allei Holway, Conor Holway, Antoine Meehan, Natasha Meehan, Molly Haynes, and Sean Haynes, and his three precious great-grandchildren, Sam Jackson, Hayley Meehan, and Matthew Jackson.
John was the caring brother of Kay Carr of (Danvers) and deceased brothers, Jimmy Meehan of Rockland and Tommy Meehan of Norwell, and sister, Mary Washek of Needham. John is survived by his sister-in-law, Flo Rosman of Weymouth and deceased sisters, Alice Butler of South Boston and Pat Moriarty of Norwell, along with more than 50 nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind dear friends who have shared their lives with John and his wife June for more than 50 years in Lexington, Nashawtuc, Quail Ridge, and White Cliffs Country Clubs and most recently Edgewood Retirement Community.
John was born on April 3, 1922 into a loving, Irish Catholic family, the oldest of five children in Dorchester. After graduation from Boston English John joined the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in the South Pacific as a navigator on PBYs then in the Naval Reserve for another 20 years, leaving as a Lieutenant Commander.
After the war, John graduated from Boston University, and began an illustrious career as the general manager of Mutual of New York's Boston-Meehan agency. He was very involved in the insurance industry matters; including serving as President of the National Association of Life Underwriters, member of the GAMC Hall of Fame; and 1st recipient of the John P. Meehan award. He was passionate about his large family and was also an avid golfer.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the wake at Brown & Hickey Funeral Home on 36 Trapelo Road in Belmont on Friday, February 15 between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m. A funeral Mass celebrating John’s life will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church, 196 Main Street, North Andover. A military burial will follow at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Andover. All are invited to a reception in John’s honor at the Andover Country Club at noon on Saturday.
John was a devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. You are forever in our hearts.
