And, when former Boston Bruins great Derek Sanderson flew to Boston to hopefully begin a sober life in 1980 he arrived at Logan Airport without a place to go. He called "Spike" Boda. "I left him a message and told him I was at the airport and had nowhere to go," recalled Sanderson. "A few minutes later he called me back and then picked me up at the airport and took me in. I honestly believe if it wasn't for Spike, I probably wouldn't be where I am today."
Spike spent many winters in Deerfield Beach, Florida at Deer Creek Country Club with his wife, Angela. In fact, Angela also spent many years working in the pro shop alongside her husband at Andover C.C., just as Spike's mother, Bess, did decades earlier with his father.
Also, Spike's two sons, Brad and Billy, both were assistant golf pros at one point in their career under their dad, and his daughter, Lynn, has spent 25 years at the club working in management and at the pro shop. Soon after he retired, Spike returned as a part-timer in the pro shop, helping out his daughter, Lynn, and helping out with the Monday golf outings.
"You can't take the dalmatian off the fire truck," said Spike.
In other words, Andover C.C. not only felt like home, it was home.
Spike is survived by his wife, Angela Manzi Boda; son, John Brad Boda and his wife, Karyn Bickford Boda; son, William Boda and his partner, Darlene Donovan; daughter, Lynn Boda and her partner, Michael Menery; his grandchilden, Kaleena Boda and Ryan Boda.
