Mary M. (Straus) Walsh, 76


Merrimac — Mary M. (Straus) Walsh, 76, of Merrimac, died on Sunday, March 23, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late, Milton and Mae (O’Donnell) Straus. Educated in New York, she attended St. Thomas College and received her master’s degree in special education from Lesley College. She and her husband, John, relocated to Merrimac from New York in 1974.

Mrs. Walsh was employed as a special education teacher at the St. Anne’s Home in Methuen for 35 years, retiring in 2001. She was instrumental in the formation of the adolescent youth school program. A woman of strong faith, she was active in the Sacred Hearts Parish community. She brought her teaching skills to the young parishioners and was involved in the parish religious education program for many years, and also the Parish Youth Group and Youth Ministry activities, since their inception.

Mary was an avid sports fan. She grew up following the then Brooklyn Dodgers in her New York hometown, and became a committed Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots fan after moving to Massachusetts.

She leaves her beloved husband of 41 years, John “Rod” Walsh, of Merrimac; a brother, John Straus and his wife, Carol, of Long Island, N.Y.; two sisters, Claire Byrnes and her husband, Albert, of Middletown, N.J., and Barbara Powers and her husband, Thomas, of Wall Township, N.J.; and several loving nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Route 125, Haverhill. Funeral services will begin on Friday morning, at 9 a.m., from the funeral home, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m., in Sacred Hearts Church, South Main St., Bradford. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Salem St., Bradford. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Sacred Hearts Parish Youth Ministry Program, 48 South Chestnut St., Bradford, MA 01835.
