Charlotte (Colby) "Cookie" Mitchell

Haverhill, MA — Charlotte (Colby) “Cookie” Mitchell, age 96, of Haverhill, formerly of Merrimac, and Hawthorne, Fla., passed away peacefully Monday morning, April 1, 2013, at Penacook Place in Haverhill. She was the wife of the late Charles S. Mitchell who died in 1992.

Charlotte was born in Vassalboro, Maine, on December 3, 1916, daughter of the late Jerry and Bertena (Johnson) Colby, graduating from Cony High School in Augusta, Maine, with the Class of 1935, then continued her education by attending the former Gates Business College in Augusta.

Before moving to Danvers, Mass., she was employed in the office of Howe Fur Company in Coopers Mills, Maine. While employed at the former Danvers State Hospital she attended classes at the Chelsea Naval Hospital and became a licensed practical nurse. She continued working at Danvers State Hospital until she retired in 1973 with 25 years of service.

Charlotte is survived by her son, Dennis C. Cook and his wife Donna of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Joan Cargill of Newburyport, Mass.; nephews, Jerrold C. Stover and wife Elaine of Bath, Maine, and Wendell Freeman of Dayton, Maine; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, many cousins who live in the Maine area, and her special friend and daughter-in-law, Shirley Mitchell of Bradford, Mass. She was predeceased by her son, Kermit D. Cargill; sister, Ida C. Stover; brother-in-law, Courtney E. Stover and niece, Joyce A. (Freeman) Stover.

The family wishes to extend a special Thank You to the staff at Penacook Place in Haverhill for the many kindnesses and the compassionate care that has been given to Charlotte.

ARRANGEMENTS: A graveside service for relatives and friends will be held at the Cargill family lot at Levensaler Cemetery in Washington, Maine, on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 1 p.m. By request of the family, there will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 395 Main St., Haverhill, MA, 01830. Arrangements are by Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac.
