Charles J. Antonelos

Haverhill, MA — Charles (Costa) James Antonelos, 79 years old, of Springfield, Mass., passed away after a long illness on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. He is predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Joanna D. (Adamopoulos) Antonelos, originally of Haverhill.

Charles was born on the island of Kefalonia in Greece on July 26, 1933, son of the late Dimitrios and Melveena Antonelos. A child during WWII, times were extremely difficult. The island was at first occupied by Italian troops and then by Germans. Poverty was rampant and Charles, at the age of 18, boarded a Greek ship owner’s vessel as a cook and left for America. Settling first in New York, then Haverhill, he would ultimately settle in Springfield where he resided for over 50 years. He bought his first home shortly after, opened his first pizzeria in Enfield, Conn., and another in Somers, Conn. After selling the pizza places, he became a distributor of Greek food products to stores and restaurants around Massachusetts and Connecticut. He was friendly, gregarious and was the life of the party with his smile and salty sense of humor. He loved company and driving anywhere, at any time. He would work all day and then take his wife and drive to New Hampshire to spend time with his brother’s family. Or, he would close the store late at night and hop in the car with his wife and drive to New York City to spend time with his daughter and her family. He was always full of energy and was always there to help family and friends in need. He will be missed by many.

Charles is survived by his daughter, Dr. Effie M. Mitsis and her husband, Christos Mitsis; two grandchildren whom he loved deeply and was so very proud of, Konstantina Calabro and Christopher Mitsis; grandson-in-law Nick Calabro; as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral Service on Saturday, April 13, at noon in Holy Apostles, Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter Street, Haverhill. Although a longtime resident of Springfield, Charles will be laid to rest in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill, next to his brother Alex Anthony and near his beloved mother Melveena Antonelos. Visitation will precede the funeral service on Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 S. Main St. (Rte. 125), Bradford, MA, 01835.
