Methuen — Joseph P. Messina, 89, of Methuen passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Nevins Health and Rehabilitation Home in Methuen. He was born in Lawrence and was the son of the late Ignazio and Maria (Gervasi) Messina.
Mr. Messina was raised and educated in Lawrence and was a graduate of Lawrence High School. He was a U.S. Navy W.W.II veteran. During the war he served on the USS Hancock as a rear gunner on a hell diver and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Mr. Messina was the founder of Messina’s Carpet in Methuen which is still in operation after 40 years of service to the community.
He was a proud member of St. Alfio’s Society in Lawrence for over 50 years and looked forward to volunteering at the Feast of the Three Saints every year.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and friends especially at the annual family cookouts.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marilyn (Gallant) Messina and his siblings, Carl Messina and Frances Cirella.
Mr. Messina is survived by his sons, Jay Messina and his wife Linda of Fort Myers Beach, FL, and Richard Messina and his wife Susan of Cape Coral, FL; his daughter, Marie Faro Messina of Methuen; his brother, Paul Messina and his wife Terry of Nashua, NH; his sister, Clemmie Federico of Methuen and his grandchildren, Mallary, Audrey, David, Jenna, Gina, Joey, Kristy and Corey. There are also 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the Cataudella Funeral Home 126 Pleasant Valley St. Methuen. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 8, 2013 at Our Lady of Good Counsel / St. Theresa’s Church, 22 Plymouth St. Methuen.
