Andover — George A. Burns, Jr., 83, of Andover, passed away peacefully at his home on October 28, 2012.
The son of the late George A., Sr., and Ella Mae (Griffiths) Burns, George was born in Medford on August 13, 1929. At age 17, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and after his discharge; he embarked upon a career as a salesman.
George enjoyed traveling, with multiple trips to San Francisco and yearly trips to Cape Cod, as two favorite destinations. He was a longtime affiliate of the Malden YMCA Early Bird Fitness Program and a consummate gardener. He was also a skilled woodworker and he took pride in his home, which he designed and built, as well as many pieces of furniture and unique gifts he created for members of his family.
George is survived by his loving wife, Karen J. (Swenson) Burns; his children, Lauren P. (Burns) Salsman of Lynn, Donna M. (Burns) Rice of Marblehead, Edward A. Ratyna, Jr. of Andover, and Robin (Ratyna) Pike of Rhode Island; his grandchildren, Eric Salsman, Adam Salsman, and Corey Rice. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara (Burns) Dyment and her husband Harvey of Venice, Fla.; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jon and Janice (Colburn) Swenson of Collegeville, Pa.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
George loved people and cultivated many lifelong friendships, and he will be missed by many.
