June Cook, 82

Chelmsford, MA — June S. (Schmottlach) Cook, 82, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at her home. She was the beloved wife of Gardner D. Cook with whom she celebrated 60 years of marriage on May 10.

She was born in Lawrence on June 9, 1931, and was the daughter of the late Alfred G. and Lillian M. (Mellen) Schmottlach. She received her education in Lawrence and North Andover schools and was a graduate of Johnson High School in North Andover, Class of 1948, of which she was salutatorian. She went on to earn an associate’s degree from Boston University.

June spent most of her life tending to the needs of her home and family. She was an avid gardener with many beautiful gardens surrounding her home, propagating and sharing plants with family and friends.

She was a charter member and an active board member of the Open Gate Garden Club in Chelmsford, serving in many capacities, including president, and vice president. She managed the annual plant sale for over 25 years. She was also a co-founder of the Busy Bees junior gardener’s club, sharing her love of nature with children. She was an active member of the herb group as well. She joined the Chelmsford Land Conservation Trust, becoming a board member. She went on to serve as secretary, vice president and then as president for 10 years. She was instrumental in preserving Proctor’s Pasture, where a bench sits dedicated to her and her husband.

She enjoyed spending time with her family at her summer home in Freedom, N.H., and wintering in New Port Richey, Fla.

In addition to her husband, June is survived by her three loving children, Randal Cook and his wife, Laurie of Vienna, Va., Dana Cook and his partner, Timothy Richard of Nashua, N.H., and Sherrilyn Cook of Nashua, N.H.; one grandson, Tyler Cook of Vienna, Va.; and her cousin, Victor Anderson and his wife, Phyllis of North Andover.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation on Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen Street, Chelmsford. Her Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at Noon at the Central Congregational Church, One Worthen St., Chelmsford. Please meet at Church. Interment will be private.
