Methuen — Ruth E. Gagne, 88, of Methuen died on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at The Nevins Nursing Center, Methuen. Mrs. Gagne was born and raised in Lawrence and was a 1942 graduate of Lawrence High School. She was a longtime active member of Christ United Methodist Church, Lawrence where she was the director of the church school and built it from 25 members to 175 members. Ruth was an avid artist, quilter, and crafter and did beautiful needle work. She donated many of her quilts to benefit needy children. She was a member of The Lawrence and Haverhill Council of Churches and was recognized as Lay Woman of The Year by The Haverhill Council.
Her family members include her husband of 67 years, Rev. Dr. Paul R. Gagne, former pastor of Christ United Methodist Church and her daughters, Judith E. and her husband, William Egan of Canterbury, N.H., and Ruthanne and her husband, Stephen Bergholm of Haverhill, Mass. She leaves her grandsons, Dr. Benjamin W. Powell and his wife, Lisa of Haverhill, Mass., and Lubbock, Texas, and Samuel L. Powell and his significant other, Brianna Sanborn of Haverhill, Mass.; and one great-grandson, Raymond Lee Powell; and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be on Thursday, October 31, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen. Funeral services will be on Friday, November 1, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence.
