Conrad L. "Connie" Girard

Merrimac, MA — Conrad L. “Connie” Girard, age 86, of Merrimac, husband of Eileen (Jeffers) Hudson Girard and the late Jeannette (Levesque) Girard, died Tuesday afternoon, April 9, 2013 at Maplewood Manor in Amesbury.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Ludger and Beatrice (Beaulieu) Girard. Following graduation from St. Joseph High School, Connie entered the Army, where he served as an infantryman. He was wounded in combat in Germany. Among the medals he received were the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge.

After his discharge, he attended Franklin Technical Institute where he received an associate’s degree in engineering. Connie worked for the Post Office Department from 1947 until 1976. He started as a clerk and was promoted to safety assistant, foreman of carriers and finally the postal inspection service. As a postal inspector, he was assigned to New York, Brooklyn, Bay Shore and Schenectady, New York, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. He returned to Boston in 1970, where he stayed until his retirement.

After his retirement, Connie returned to college and received a bachelor's degree from Salem State College and a master’s degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Connie worked in various jobs after college, including job developer for Community Action, Abuse and Neglect Investigator for Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley and master program student counselor for New Hampshire College.

Connie volunteered at Ruth’s House in Haverhill where he was on the board of directors and treasurer. In South Carolina, he was a volunteer and on the board of directors at the Hardeeville Thrift Store. Connie was also a volunteer hearing officer for the Massachusetts Division of Children and Families and a member of the Friends of the Merrimac Library.

Connie loved to travel, work in his garden, do repairs around the house, play poker at the Merrimac Council on Aging, and read.

In addition to his wife, Eileen, he is survived by his daughters, Yvonne Wait, and Jeanne Mather and husband, Dennis, both of Scotia, N.Y., and Noella McIntosh and husband, James, of Hindsville, Ga.; stepdaughters, Cynthia Hudson, of Peabody, and Barbara Hubbard and husband, Tom, of Swampscott; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Leslie, of Salem; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Patricia Yelverton and husband, James, of Gallatin, Tenn. He was predeceased by his brothers, Laurent, Alfred and Walter.

ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 10 a.m., at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main St., Merrimac, followed by burial in Walnut Cemetery, Haverhill. By request of the family, there will be no visiting hours.
