Georgetown — Walter H. Janes, 88, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport surrounded by caring family members. He was born in Chelsea, Mass., on October 17, 1924 to the late John E. and Clara (Howell) Janes. Raised and educated in Chelsea, he was a graduate of Chelsea High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy where he served proudly during WWII. Following an honorable discharge, he enrolled in Wentworth Institute of Technology and graduated with the Class of 1947.
Walter was employed at General Electric as a senior draftsman for 40 years before his retiring in 1988. He was a 56 year resident of Georgetown where he resided with his loving wife, Irene (Boumenot) Janes, until her death in 1991.
Walter was a member of the American Legion, Post 211, in Georgetown; and a Master Mason for 65 years with the Star of Bethlehem Lodge in Wakefield, Mass. He was involved in Georgetown politics for 20 years as a past member of the Board of Water Commissioners and a member of the Finance Committee.
Walter is survived by his sister, Clarabel (Peggy) Stopzynski; his sister-in-law, Annette Janes; and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: A private family service was held on May 8, 2013, at Harmony Cemetery in Georgetown.
