Methuen, MA — F. Sam Faro, 89, of Methuen, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2013, at Mary Immaculate Nursing Home. He was born in Catania, Italy, and came to this country as a small child, and was raised and educated in Lawrence. He was the son of the late Nunzio and Concettina (Anfuso) Faro. Sam graduated from Lawrence High School and from American Institute of Baking and Decorating.
Sam was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. After the war, he returned home and took over the family business, the former SunRay Bakery on East Street in Methuen, with his brothers until it closed in 1980. Sam was very active with the Sons of Italy Lodge 902 and served as president, and also held state offices with the lodge, He was also a member of the St. Alfio Society and the Lawrence Knight of Columbus.
Sam is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary J. (Giuffrida) Faro of Methuen; his sons, David Faro of Methuen, and Nunzio G. Faro of Worcester; his only grandchild, Lindsay M. Faro; his sister, Santina Liberarti of Las Vegas, Nev.; two special nephews, James Faro and his wife, Mary Jean, of Moultonborough, N.H., and their daughter, Alyssa Faro, and John Faro Jr. and his wife, Wanda, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews, and cousins. Sam was predeceased by his son, Maurice Faro, and his sibling’s brothers, Fred Faro, Joseph Faro, John Faro; and sisters, Carmelina Iannalfo and Stella Robin.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends will be received at visiting hours on Thursday, September, 5, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street, Methuen. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, September 6, at 1 p.m., at Corpus Christi Parish in Holy Rosary Church, 35 Essex Street, Lawrence. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery Methuen.
