Joseph A. Messina, 99

Methuen — Joseph A. Messina, 99, of Methuen passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013, at the Nevins Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Lawrence, and was the son of the late Vincenzo and Vincenzina (Valvo) Messina.

Mr. Messina was raised in Lawrence and was a graduate of Lawrence High School. He was retired from the Bolta Co. in Lawrence, and was a member of the Italian Men’s Club, International Institute and the Methuen Senior Center. He was an avid bowler and a member of many leagues throughout the years.

He was a prolific gardener, who loved to share produce that he grew with friends and family.

Mr. Messina was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary E. (Petralia) Messina, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage. He is survived by his sons, Vincent and his wife, Jacquelyn, of Nashua, N.H., Charles and his wife, Lauren, of Salisbury, Richard and his wife, Catherine, of Hudson, N.H., and Michael and his wife, Cathleen, of Methuen; his daughter, Joyce Desmet and her husband, John, of Methuen; and his sisters, Sarah Macarione of Salisbury, and Ann Calderone of Methuen. He also leaves 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring staff of the Nevins Rehabilitation Center for all their hard work that made their father’s last days as comfortable and as peaceful as possible.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, September 9, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at 11 a.m., at St. Lucy’s Church, 254 Merrimack St., Methuen. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence.
