Marie J. Stefan

Hampton, NH — Marie J. Stefan, longtime resident of Hampton, died Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at her home with her daughter and son- in-law by her side.

She was born in Lawrence, Mass., attended local schools there and graduated from Lawrence High School with the Class of 1948 where she was very popular and active as secretary and treasurer, as a cheerleader, member of the student council and enjoyed writing articles for the school newspaper with the pen name of Snoopy.

In her earlier years she was employed at Lamie’s Tavern, served in the Hampton school system lunch program, also worked at the former Pierce Leather Gift Shop as well as the Casino Gift Shop at Hampton Beach. Her last part time employment was in the bakery at the Galley Hatch Restaurant.

Mrs. Stefan was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish in Hampton and also attended St. Theresa Church in Rye Beach. She was one of the original “Wall Nuts” a group of friends that would gather frequently at the sea wall at the end of High Street and in earlier years enjoyed the beach at Plaice Cove with more friends they called themselves “The Beach Crowd.” She was the wife of the late Edward “Stuffy” Stefan who predeceased her in 1990.

Family members include her daughter, Deborah Fernandez and husband, John, of Raymond; two sons, James Stefan and wife, Heidi, of West Palm Beach, Fla., John Stefan of Rye; her five grandchildren, Jamie, Ian and Jeramie Stefan and his wife Leora, Brian and Brendan Ward, nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by two sisters, Frances Carroll and Eileen Murphy.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at St. Theresa Church, 815 Central Road, Rye Beach. Burial will follow in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.
