Ethel M. (Butland) Miller, 85

Amesbury Ma — Ethel M. (Butland) Miller of Amesbury passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 18 in Portsmouth, NH. She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Albert James (A.J.) of Seabrook NH in 1993.

She is survived by her three children, Donna L. Miller of No. Hampton, NH; Edward T. Miller and wife Barbara of Portsmouth, NH; and Sandra J. Steck and husband Dr. Rob along with two grandchildren Cody Bryce and Austin James of Holland, MI. She is survived by one sister, Doris L. Vynorius of West Newbury. Gone ahead are brother-in-law William W. (Bill) Vynorius and brothers Albert of Newton, NH, Leonard of Epping, NH, and Clarence Jr. (Bucky) Butland of Amesbury. Surviving them are wives (respectively) Marnie (Smith), Janet (Gamble), and Carol (Wilkinson) Butland. Several nieces and nephews.

Ethel was born and brought up in Amesbury, where she attended and graduated from Amesbury High School in 1946. She worked at Towle Silver in Newburyport. Her hobbies included roller skating and stock car racing in the "Powderpuff" derbies where she competed under the name of "Cannonball Butland." In addition, she and A.J. rarely missed a weekend of dancing, usually at Lane's Ten Acres in Merrimac.

She was a devoted mother, never missing a sporting event or school activity that her children were involved with. She also served as an officer for the Winnacunnet High School Football Boosters. Ethel also enjoyed long and rewarding retail sales careers with Tres Chic Wigs and Sarah Coventry Jewelry. Other organizations she belonged to were the Rebekah's, The American Legion, The Moose and Elks Clubs.

She and her husband A.J retired to Seminole, FL in 1985 where they enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors; playing cards and attending various functions at the Legion and V.F.W. In addition, Ethel spent most of her Sundays cheering on the New England Patriots of which she was an avid fan.

Andover, MA — Jonathan G. Leonard of Andover passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 21, at the age of 39. He was the loving son of Dr. Thomas and Lois Leonard of Andover; and beloved brother to Russell Leonard, Dr. Jeffrey Leonard, and Suzanne Vazquez; brother in-law to Dr. Angel Gangoy-Leonard and Osvaldo Vazquez; and proud uncle of Dylan and Matthew Leonard, and Oliver, Samuel, and Amelia Vazquez. He was employed at Stop and Shop where he had been a loyal employee for over 10 years. He was very active in the Special Olympics and he won numerous medals and trophies in different events through the years. He was also involved in several local bowling leagues and enjoyed spending his free time with his girlfriend, Tina, and his large group of friends from the area.

Reading, formerly of Lawrence — Helen D. (DeFusco) Rickley of Reading, formerly of Lawrence, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Pasqualina (Miele) and Alexander, and her sister, Evelyn. Helen had a beauty of character and personality that was noticed by everyone she met. She devoted her life to raising and loving her family. She also devoted a good part of her life to her parish church and the elementary school children of Reading at Pearl Street and Killam Schools. She served as a volunteer teacher’s aide at the two schools for almost 30 years. She served at St. Athanasius in the old Arts and Crafts group and sang in the church choir for almost 35 years.

Atkinson, NH — Charliene P. Moore died May 16, 2013, in Pleasant Valley, N.H., after a long illness from cancer. She was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Aug. 16, 1945, daughter of the late Pearl and Charles Moore. She grew up in Everett, Mass., and graduated from Malden High. Charliene worked at the IRS for 20 years and for Securitas Services where her security assignments included stints at Sweetheart Plastics, Hewlitt Packard and Global Insights. She fought a long, hard battle with cancer and through it all loved her co-workers and friends. Charliene is survived by her longtime companion, Linda McAdams of Atkinson, N.H., and “Mac,” her furry little friend.
