North Andover — Lois (Broderick) Cushing, 76, died February 27, 2013 at her home in North Andover with her four children at her side. She was born on September 18, 1936 in North Andover MA to the late Arthur and Rose (Berard) Broderick. Raised in North Andover, she was a graduate of Johnson High School class of 1954 and following sojourns in New Hampshire, Oregon, New Mexico, and Vermont, she returned to town in 1965. Lois began her professional career as a secretary at Western Electric in North Andover. While raising her children she was self-employed as a day care provider. She was later employed for many years by what is now the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services at their Berry and Hogan facilities, including as Assistant to the Director.
A committed member of any community she lived in, Lois was active in many voluntary and civic endeavors. Principle among these, she was involved with the Merrimack Valley Easter Seals teaching swimming to the physically and developmentally challenged and volunteering her time whenever called. She treasured her involvement with the American Field Service Intercultural Exchange Program, where she served for many years as president as well as hosted exchange students from Spain, Sweden, and Paraguay. She also served as warden in charge of polling at Precinct 5 in North Andover during elections. During her winters in Edgewater, Florida she was a member of the Red Hat Society, enjoying their camaraderie while working in their local thrift shop. In addition to swimming, Lois was a determined skier and reveled in those occasions when she caught more fish than her husband while fly fishing the ponds and streams of New England.
Lois was predeceased by her husband of 54 years Joseph B. Cushing, who died last July. She is survived by her children Christopher Cushing of Washington, DC; Elizabeth Foote and her husband Timothy of Methuen; Jennifer Barbera and her husband Kevin of Haverhill; and Jonathan Cushing and his wife Catherine Heacox of New York, grandsons, Tyler and Ryan Joseph Barbera, Cory and Cameron Foote, and Griffin Cushing, sisters, Jane Teichert, Rhoda Weston, and Elizabeth “Lissa” Archer, brothers, Michael and Peter Broderick, several nieces and nephews and her Paraguayan “son” Benito Mendoza. She was also predeceased by her siblings Marie Dowd; Sister Frances Broderick, SCH; and Stephen Broderick.
ARRANGEMENTS: A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Monday March 4, at St. Michael’s Church in North Andover. Burial will follow in Ridgewood Cemetery also in North Andover. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to greet the family beginning at 10:00 AM at St. Michael’s prior to the Mass. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third St., North Andover, MA 01845. At Lois’ request there will be no viewing hours.
