ARLINGTON, Va. — Thomas Michael Scanlon of Arlington, Va., died Saturday, March 19, 2011 unexpectedly at home.
Tom was born June 9, 1944 in Lawrence, where he lived for 24 years. He was the son of the late Patrick J. and Mary A. (Walsh) Scanlon. Tom graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence and Merrimack College in North Andover with a B.A. in Economics. After graduation, Tom worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. for 34 years. At the time he retired, he was the Program Director for the Rural Utilities Service.
Tom was an avid reader and a loyal Celtics and Red Sox fan.
Tom is survived by his son, Brendan Scanlon and his wife Kelly of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughter, Meghan Reynolds and her husband John of Charlottesville, Va., and daughter, Amy Sherwood and her husband Matthew of London, England; and six grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by a brother, Timothy Scanlon and his wife Jan of Berlin, Conn.; two sisters, Margaret Brien and her husband, Romeo of Vancouver, Wash., and Patricia M. Lyons and her husband Robert of North Andover; as well as several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: A Mass of celebration of Tom's life will be held on this Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Church in North Andover.
