West Newbury, MA — Walter Bigelow Drescher, age 78, longtime resident of West Newbury and Merrimac, passed away early Sunday morning at Woodbriar of Wilmington, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Boston, June 12, 1934, he was the son of the late William and Virginia (Bigelow) Drescher and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1952. After graduating from Salem State College, he went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Illinois, Champaign Campus.
He pursued a fulfilling and rewarding career teaching mathematics at Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury, Bentley College in Waltham, and Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill. As an exceptionally dedicated teacher, he inspired and encouraged many students throughout the years.
Walter was a loving, caring man, devoted not only to his career but also to his family, friends and his church, having been a longtime member of the West Newbury Congregational Church.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Carol L. (Griswold) Drescher, and his beloved daughter, Karen J. Marshall, he is survived by his two sons, Kurt W. Drescher and wife, Sharon, of Reading and David A. Drescher and wife, Laura, of Merrimac; his eight grandchildren, Molly, Owen and Ben Drescher, Kyra and Lily Drescher, Jordan Marshall, Samantha Devine and Harper Marshall; his son-in-law, Robert Marshall of Amesbury; along with several nieces, nephews and extended family.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac, will be Thursday, May 23, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 24, 2013, at 11 a.m., at the West Newbury Congregational Church, 308 Main Street, West Newbury.
