Charles J. Penta Sr., 85

Haverhill — Charles J. Penta Sr, 85, of Haverhill, formerly of the Villages, Lady Lake, Fla., died Tuesday, March 11, at the Merrimack Valley Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late, Thomas and Antoinette (Piso) Penta. He attended Haverhill Public Schools and was a graduate of Haverhill Trade School, Class of 1946. Mr. Penta was employed as a truck driver for the North Penn Trucking Company for over 25 years, retiring in 1988. Upon his retirement, he and his wife relocated to the Villages in Lady Lake, Fla., until returning to Haverhill in 2012.

Mr. Penta was quite active at the Villages as he was known as the Commander. A real people person, to him a stranger was just a friend he hadn’t met yet. Never wanting to sit still, he was the President of the computer club, he played on the local softball team, and was a champion pickleball player. For the past 19 years, Mr. Penta would return to Haverhill for a golf tournament given in his late son's memory to help support Haverhill High School sports programs. He did not golf; however he made it a point to be involved in the planning and would greet every person who played.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves his wife of 53 years, Lucille M. (Dichard) Penta of Haverhill; a daughter, Lucille M. Ouellette of Haverhill; a son, Anthony Penta of Derry, N.H.; a granddaughter, Jessica Ouellette; a grandson, Jeffrey Emerson Jr.; and great-granddaughter, Steffanie Emerson. He was predeceased by his son, Charles J. Penta Jr. and sister, Marie Tarullo.
