Haverhill — Rita C. (Deveau) Flavin, 89, a life-long Haverhill resident, passed away Wednesday, April 10, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Haverhill, she was the daughter of Joseph and Albina (Gagnon) Deveau. A life-long parishioner of St. James Church, she attended St. James Grammar School and was a graduate of St. James High School, Class of 1941.
Mrs. Flavin was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, and she cherished every moment of the work that came with it. She put the needs of others ahead of herself. Her husband, the late Captain Charles W. Flavin, H.F.D., worked many side jobs to support his family, so as Mrs. Flavin would be available to raise their three girls and care for Mrs. Flavin’s mother, Albina Deveau. Prior to raising her family she was employed as a stock clerk for Woolworth’s in downtown Haverhill. She enjoyed cooking, music, gardening, and feeding the birds in her yard. Every summer the family would pack up for a couple of weeks and enjoy summer vacation on Plum Island.
She leaves her beloved daughters, Brenda Birdsall, and her husband, Robert, of Atkinson, N.H., Linda Ferrick and her companion, David Lucy, of Haverhill, and Debra Scovotti and her husband, Benny, also of Haverhill; unofficially adopted daughter, Liz O’Neal; grandchildren, Laura Hanson, and her husband, Paul, of Haverhill, James Boutin and his wife, Laurie, of Camp Lejune, N.C., now serving in Afghanistan, Michael Birdsall, Matthew Birdsall, and Lisa Fogler; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Deveau Jr, and sister, Doris McAdams.
The family of Mrs. Flavin would like to express their sincere gratitude to Teri Funk who assisted her children in the care of Rita.
