SOUTH LAWRENCE — Elpidio Mercedes, 71, died early yesterday morning at his South Lawrence residence surrounded by his devoted family.
He was the husband of Mrs. Altagracia (Jimenez) de Mercedes of South Lawrence.
A native of San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic, he was the son of the late Mateo and Maria (Tomasina) Mercedes.
Prior to his retirement, he was a merchant and distributor of wholesale dry goods and sundries.
He immigrated to the area in the late 1980s to be closer to his family and was especially proud of his children and their accomplishments. He enjoyed playing dominoes and closely followed baseball. Mr. Mercedes led his life by example and good deed; he was gentle but firm, loving but strict. His family will forever cherish his memory as a man of principle.
In addition to his wife, family members include, eight children, Elvis E. Mercedes, Edis U. Mercedes, Yenni A. Mercedes, Jacqueline M. Mercedes, Gisela A. Mercedes, Euris E. Mercedes, Elvoris E. Mercedes, Edinson E. Mercedes; cherished grandfather to 28 and great-grandfather to 7. He is lovingly survived by extended family and many loyal friends.

Calling hours are today, Thursday, June 20, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home’s South Chapel.
The funeral and final acts of farewell will take place in the Dominican Republic.
