Georgetown, MA — Hertha R. (Scheffel) McCarthy, 98, recently of Amesbury, formerly of Georgetown and Lawrence, died peacefully Saturday morning at Maplewood Center in Amesbury. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward J. McCarthy, who died in 1977.
Born in Langenberg, Germany, December 9, 1914, she was the daughter of the late William and Ida Scheffel. As a young girl, she immigrated to this country with her family, settling in Lawrence and graduating from Lawrence High School. She went on to receive her cosmetology license, and worked for local beauty shops until she opened her own shop, Beartha’s Beauty Shop in Georgetown.
She loved her family, and was especially proud and fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always looked forward to her trips to Maine.
She is survived by her two sons, William F. McCarthy of Sutton, and John W. McCarthy of Fairbanks, Alaska; three grandchildren, Sabrina and Shawn of Troy, Ohio and Sarah of Sanford, Maine; and two great-granddaughters, Natasha and Faith Ann, both of Sanford, Maine. She was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth (Scheffel) Hahn, who died in 2001.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services and interment will be private for the family and there will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are by Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury.
