Groveland — R. Harriet “Podee” (Jacobs) Hopkins, 86, of Groveland and formerly of Haverhill, died on Thursday, May 8, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Meriden, Conn. and was the daughter of the late Frederic A. and Harriet (Blanchard) Jacobs. Mrs. Hopkins earned her nursing degree from the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at the former Hale Hospital, Haverhill, and later as a private duty nurse.
Podee lived her life guided by a deep faith. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, Haverhill. She taught Sunday School, worked with the Mary Martha Group, and organized the Last Supper Tableau.
She was a prolific writer, journaling everyday events and writing beautiful thank you notes as a volunteer for the MSPCA. She was a good friend to animals and raised two dogs.
Podee was a passionate and caring mother, and a kind and generous people person. She always took the time to listen and to make you feel loved. She enjoyed spending warm summer days at Lake Winnipesaukee, swimming, waterskiing, rowing, and gathering family and friends for midday feasts. At Nichols Village, she enjoyed Tai Chi and Yoga, and directed a drama group performing songs and skits with her husband and friends.
She will be missed by her loving husband of 64 years, Stewart W. Hopkins of Groveland; her daughters, Hillary J. Benson of Haverhill, and Heidi H. and her husband, Norman M. Delisle Jr. of Manchester, Mass.; her sons, Harvey W. Hopkins of Carbondale, Colo., and Carl F. Hopkins of Plaistow, N.H.; a brother, F. Neill Jacobs of Meriden, Conn.; and her grandchildren, Matthew Benson, Warner Hopkins, Eric Delisle and Rain Delisle.
ARRANGEMENTS: The family will be receiving relatives and friends on Tuesday, May 13, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill.
