Harold Dwight Benner


Riverside, CA — Son of Clayton and Freda Benner passed away on December 21, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jane A. Surrette-Benner, in 2008. He is survived by his four children, Richard C. Benner of Tuolumne, California, Robin J. Cara of Kelseyville, California, Dwight H. Benner of Riverside, California, and Todd B. Benner of Riverside, California. In addition, he is survived by 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Harold was born on January 3, 1925, in Portland, Maine. He spent four years in the Army Air Force. He was a WWII Veteran. He served as a ground crew chief, spending one year in Germany during the occupation. He attended the East Coast Aero Technical School and spent twelve years as a Department of Defense civilian airplane mechanic serving concurrently as an Air Force Reservist. He was activated in 1960 for the Cuban Missile Crisis. He transferred within the DoD to become a Quality Assurance Specialist inspecting contractor parts during the Vietnam War and NASA space missions. He received recognition from NASA for his contribution to the space program. After more than 30 years of federal service, Harold retired in 1987. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Elks Lodge. He enjoyed Las Vegas and playing bingo. He loved his family and spent a lot of time with his grandchildren. He was a loving husband, caring father and grandfather, and appreciated brother. “All my love, all my life.”

ARRANGEMENTS: Services will be held on January 2, 2013, at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Mortuary, 11500 Arlington Ave, Riverside, California (951) 689-1441. Visitation will be held at 10 AM followed by the memorial service at noon. A 2 PM interment service will be held at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
