Haverhill — Francis W. “Fran” Cleary, Jr., 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA.
Fran was born in Haverhill on March 12, 1940 to the late Francis W. Cleary, Sr. and Frances E. (Fowlie) Cleary.
He was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1958, and Babson College. He served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps and recently enjoyed a 50th Reunion with the army buddies with whom he served in Okinawa.
Fran worked with his father at Cleary Cleaners in Haverhill prior to joining the King Davis Agency where he served as Vice President and Office Manager for 29 years. He maintained his real estate license in both MA and NH, and served as past President of the Greater Haverhill Multiple Listing Service. He taught accounting at NECC for the past 36 years, a passion which he referred to as “his golf game”. Fran joined the Haverhill Lions Club in 1961 and served as President and Life Member. He was also a member of the Penacook Place Board of Directors for the past eight years. In addition to teaching, Fran loved to travel, read and spend time with his family.
Fran is survived by his wife of 26 years, Barbara Z. (Jewett) Cleary, his children, Francis T. Cleary of Manchester, MA, Jennifer Cleary Spargo and her husband Brian of Dover, NH, Tamara Bourque and her husband Brian of Kittery Point, ME, and Todd Zuzel of Kensington, NH; grandchildren, Tara, Daniel and Sarah Spargo, Zelica, Zachary and Griffin Zuzel, Brahm and Strauss Bourque and Matthew Hartung as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Fran was predeceased by his brother Eric D. Cleary.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill on Friday, February 15, 2013 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 16th, at 11:30 a.m. at the Universalist Unitarian Church, 15 Kenoza Avenue in Haverhill.
