Rev. Edward L. King, 89

Haverhill — Rev. Edward L. King, 89, passed away February 3, 2013 at the Hannah Duston Nursing Center after a lengthy period of declining health.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late, Edward L. and Mary A. (Sullivan) King. He attended Newton, MA public schools and was a graduate of Newton High School, class of 1941. Shortly after graduation he enlisted into the Army Air Corps. A WWII Veteran, he proudly served from 1942 until being honorably discharged in 1946.

Coming home from the service, rather than follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps into professional baseball, he followed a greater calling to St. John’s Seminary in Brighton. He was ordained a Priest in 1955 by Richard Cardinal Cushing. Throughout his lengthy career, he served the people of Our Lady of Grace in Chelsea and Everett, St. Clements, in Somerville, St. Mary’s, in Georgetown, St. Lucy Parish, in Methuen, and finally at St. James Parish in Haverhill, for twenty-two years, retiring in 2007.

He is survived by nephews Kenneth King Jr, Richmond, VA, Donald King, Stow, Mathew King, Wrentham, Andrew King, Danvers, Timothy King, Dedham, and Christopher King, Concord, nieces Marilyn Beauchense, Windham, NH, Lisa Lamoureus, Townsend, Kathleen Dillon, Harbinger, NC, Suzanne Hartwick, Ft. Atkinson, WI, Nancy Fillmore, Boxborough, and Ellen Ravensdale, Franklin, TN, sister in law, Jean M. King, and many great nieces and nephews, close friend and caregiver, Mae Rita Consentino, of Salem, NH, and many friends and former parishioners who have come to love him during his long religious life. He was predeceased by two brothers, Donald T., Kenneth F., and sister, Mary A. King.

ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family are respectfully invited to attend his calling hours as he lay in state in St. James Church, Winter St. Haverhill on Thursday (TODAY) to begin with a Rite of Reception at 4:00 PM followed by visitation until 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning at 11:00 AM in St. James Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Mt. Benedict Cemetery, 409 Corey St. West Roxbury, MA.
