Haverhill — Richard A. “Plaz” Williams, 81, of Haverhill, beloved husband of Nancy (McCarthy), passed away Saturday, February 16 at Lahey Clinic in Burlington with his family by his side, after complications from pneumonia.
A lifelong resident of Haverhill, he was the son of the late Andrew J. and L. Edna (McInnis) Williams.
He was a graduate of St. James grammar School, and St. James High School. A Korean War Veteran, Mr. Williams proudly served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.
He was well known in town as an amateur softball pitcher from which he got his nickname "Plaz". An avid golfer, he was a member of the Crystal Lake Golf Club since 1984.
Richard retired from Bell Laboratories in 1989 after working as a draftsman for 34 years. He also retired after 15 years from the U S Postal Service in North Reading.
He leaves his beloved wife of fifty-three years, Nancy (McCarthy) Williams, of Haverhill, two daughters, Karen of Haverhill, Cheryl and her husband Chuck Espinola of Derry, NH, a son Kevin and his wife Cheryl of Haverhill, five cherished grandsons, Nicholas and Christopher Espinola, Drew, Brian and Justin Williams.
He is also survived by three brothers, John Williams and his wife Phyllis, James Williams and his wife Connie, Robert Williams and his wife Jean, a sister Norma Riley, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Kay Cashman.
ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Wednesday, from 5 until 8 PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 AM from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 AM in St. James Church, Winter St. Haverhill.
