FALMOUTH — Rosemary Patricia Smaha, 65, of Falmouth, died Tuesday February 19, 2013 at New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland.
She was born in Portland on March 11, 1947 a daughter of John J. and Patricia Fox Scanlan. Rosemary attended St. Joseph School and was a 1965 graduate of Cathedral High School and a 1968 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.
Following her education, Rosemary began working as a labor and delivery nurse at Mercy Hospital.
On June 13, 1970 she married Kenneth J. Smaha at St. Joseph’s Church in Portland.
After her marriage to Ken, they moved to Massachusetts. Rosemary continued her nursing career and love of children at Lynn Hospital in Lynn, MA where their first child, Karen, was born in 1972. In 1974 the family moved to Connecticut. During this time Rosemary and Ken had a second child, Michael, and Rosemary continued to raise and nurture her family. In 1978 they moved to Virginia and Rosemary returned to work part time at Martha Jefferson Hospital. There Rosemary developed a love for ACC Basketball and committed much of her time to the local community, where she played an active role in gaining approval for a new elementary school. Rosemary enjoyed an expanded family at Church of the Incarnation and in her neighborhood. In 1988 the family moved to Boxford, Massachusetts and Rosemary became the school nurse for the Spofford Pond Elementary School, a position that allowed her to share her love for children. She balanced her position as nurse and mother to all children and helped establish the Care Committee which developed into the Community Giving Tree. She retired from that position in 2004. The family returned home to Maine in 2009.
Rosemary’s primary activities centered around her family. During the years she and Ken were away, she loved returning to Maine for summer vacations and family gatherings in Falmouth where she spent many childhood summers. Her children soon learned to love that same experience as have her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband Kenneth of Falmouth; a daughter, Karen P. Lindquist and husband Brian of Wellesley, MA; a son, Michael J. Smaha and wife Carly of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Jean Scanlan and partner Sonja Hicks of Natick, MA; Susan Anderson of Cumberland; Mary Feigenbaum and husband Glen of Falmouth; three grandchildren, Kathryn Rose Lindquist, Sarah Patricia Lindquist, Bennett William Smaha; and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited 11:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home followed by a 12:00 noon Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Martyrs Church, 266 Foreside Road, Falmouth Foreside.
