Avon, CT — It is with deep sorrow that the Chiara family announces the passing of Matthew A. Chiara, 88, who died peacefully on May 9, 2013, in Avon, Conn. He was born in Lawrence, Mass., on August 10, 1924, a son of the late Carmello and Josephine (Fichera) Chiara and brother of the late Thomas Chiara.
Matthew was a 1948 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, a Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. After an honorable discharge, he joined the family business manufacturing cheese in Lawrence.
Mr. Chiara is survived by Angela (Mauceri) Chiara, his beloved wife of 55 years; his adoring daughters, Nina McElroy, wife of Neal, of New York City, Gina Chiara of Simsbury, Conn., Trina Manganello, wife of Richard, of Avon Conn., and Rina Chiara, of New York City. He leaves behind his loving grandchildren, Kathryn and William McElroy, Isabella and Olivia Manganello, as well as his niece, Joan Kelley, and nephew, Tommy Chiara.
ARRANGEMENTS: A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Lucy’s Church, 254 Merrimack Street, Methuen, MA, on May 18, 2013, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at a later date.
