Biddeford, ME — Sister Jeanne Soucy, formerly known as Sister Marie Jeanne Therese, died at St. Joseph Convent on July 25, 2013, at the age of 88. Jeanne was the 13th child in a family of 16 children born to Patrick Soucy and Suzanne Lavoie. Jeanne was born on April 12, 1925, in Grand Isle, Maine, where she attended Lincoln Elementary and High School. She then entered the work force until she joined the Congregation of the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, also known as the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec, in Biddeford in February 1945. After her initial formation, Sister Jeanne pronounced her vows in February 1947.
Her long teaching career of more than 22 years took her to St. Joseph School in Biddeford and in Old Town, Sacred Heart School in Caribou, Maine, and to St. Ann School in Lawrence, St. Theresa School in Methuen, Mass., and far away to Holy Rosary Academy in Donelson, Tenn. In 1974, Sister Jeanne studied for a full year in Lewiston, Maine, in preparation for her position as Director of Housekeeping Services when St. Andre Health Care Facility opened its doors to receive the sick and the elderly of the area. After three years, she left the Health Care to assume the task of local Superior in Grand Isle and later in Bay View. Her other various assignments were bookkeeper, sacristan, Pastoral Care worker and secretary in several of our convents. In 1987, Sister Jeanne returned to St. Andre Health Care Facility as secretary to the Administrator for 15 years before retiring to St. Joseph Convent in 2002. She continued at St. Andre Health Care for a time as a volunteer when needed.
She is survived by a sister, Freda Soucy of Plantsville, Conn.; two brothers, Euclide Soucy of Grand Isle, Maine, and Gerard Soucy of Madawaska.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2013, at St. Joseph Convent, 409 Pool St., Biddeford, ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 29, 2013, at St. Joseph Convent. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford.
