Andover — Janet Wetterberg died peacefully surrounded by family at the Meadowview Care & Rehab Center in North Reading, on Friday, July 12.
Born in Andover on July 5, 1935, Jan was a 1953 graduate of Punchard High School. Jan was an excellent athlete, especially in softball and basketball. An avid swimmer, she worked as a life guard at Pomps Pond in Andover. Jan also worked as a soda jerk at the at Simeon's Drug Store on Main Street in Andover. Recognized for her leadership and athletic skills, Janet was elected to the Andover High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Janet married her high school sweetheart, Carl (Bob) Wetterberg, also an Andover native, at Andover's Christ Church in 1954. During their 34 year marriage, the couple raised a wonderful family while traveling the world as an Air Force family during Bob's 20-year Air Force career. Janet was heavily involved in Air Force wives club activities, earning a yearly award in 1969 from the base commander at Hahn Air Force Base, Hahn, Germany.
Shortly after Bob retired from the Air Force, the family settled back home in Andover in 1971. Jan loved working as a waitress, having been employed at Valles Steak House, River Road in Andover and Harry M's on Rte.12 in North Andover. She loved gardening, hosting family gatherings at her home, and was an active member, serving as a Deaconess in the Andover Baptist Church, before joining the Free Christian Church in Andover. Janet enjoyed serving the church as an usher, and participating in the weekly Bible study and Senior Link. Jan also volunteered at the Andover Senior Center, helping drive seniors to appointments and helping the staff organize activities. Jan loved helping others and volunteering her time. Jan was known for her bright smile, and was highly respected by her family, friends and peers.
