MASHPEE, MA — Dorothy Jane (Sulesky) Jayes, RN, of Mashpee, Mass., and Marco Island, Fla., and beloved spouse of Robert L Jayes, died on June 2, at her home in Mashpee, after a long courageous struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
Dorothy was born in Medford, Mass. She received her diploma from Somerville High School in 1946, and graduated cum laude from Emmanuel College in 1950, with a degree in biology. After college, while working at Tuft's Medical School, she considered a religious vocation, but instead married Robert Lane Jayes, whom she met while driving a nun to a science conference. They recently had celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Dorothy enjoyed being at home and caring for her eight children, but as the youngest child entered school, she decided to begin a second career. At the age of 50, she enrolled in Northern Essex Community College and became a registered nurse, working at Lawrence General Hospital in Lowell, Mass., and Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass.
Dorothy leaves her children Diane Shultz and husband, Rich, of Mount Joy, Pa., Eileen Lee, RN and husband, Dr. Ben of Chevy Chase, Md., Dr. Robert L. Jayes and wife, Ginny, of Washington, D.C., Christopher D. Jayes, CPA and wife, Jane Gray of Louisville, Ky., Mary Keally, RN and husband, Taber, of Milton Mass., Janice Lee Jayes, PhD of Champaign, Ill., and Kathleen Jayes and husband, Topper, of Brooklyn, N.Y. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Ruth and Ed Sulesky of Somerville; her brother, Edward Sulesky of Concord; and her beloved son, Michael Edward Jayes.
Dorothy adored the 23 grandchildren she leaves behind, Greg, Kristina and Brian Shultz, Allison, Mary Beth, Kathryn and Ben Lee, Michael and Erin Jayes, Lucy, Molly, Katherine and Chris Jayes, Chris, Adam, John and Colin Keally, Kirby Jayes and Martin and Maddy Walwik, and Jack, Beatrice and Jude Rimel.
