SOUTH LAWRENCE — Joseph P. Hurley Sr., 71, a longtime resident of this city passed away Wednesday at Merrimack Valley Hospice House, Haverhill, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Bridgeport, Conn., he was raised in Ayer and was the son of the late Edward D. and Anna M. (Curran) Hurley. He was a graduate of Ayer High School, class of 1959.
He rendered service to this nation in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1963. He served aboard the USS Gearing, a Navy destroyer and the USS Mills a Navy destroyer escort ship. He was a member of Lawrence VFW Post 1549 and the Ward 6 Club.
Mr. Hurley was very proud of his Irish heritage and was born with the Irish love of talk. He spoke freely and his love of friendship and good humor will not be forgotten by those who considered him a friend.
He was the husband of Donna May (Beveridge) Hurley of Lawrence; proud father of two sons, Joseph P. Hurley Jr., and Sean M. Hurley and his wife Lori A. of Lawrence; three daughters, Bonnie J. Nuernberg and her husband Kurt F. of Lawrence, Donna M. Hurley of N. Reading, the late Anne Marie Zappala and her husband Vincent of Methuen; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward D. Hurley, Jr., and Terrance T. Hurley; three sisters, Maureen H. Broussard, Anne C. Horgan and the late Marie T. Waiksnis; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours, Monday, October 22, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick Church.
