Madrid, Spain — J. Ernest (Sonny) Belanger, 78, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, in Madrid Spain, where he had lived for 48 years. Born on July 20, 1935, in Lawrence, Mass., he was the son of Emile and Leda (Matton) Belanger. Ernie graduated from CCHS, Class of 1954. He was a graduate of Marist College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and attended Middlebury College in Vermont, where he received his master's degree in Spanish in Madrid, Spain.
He taught at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., St. Agnes High School in New York, Marist College in New York, Torrejon Air Force Base, and the American School in Madrid, Spain.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Alicia; his daughter, Amaya and her husband, Javier; his son, Diego; and his two grandsons, Nicolas and Martin, all of Madrid, Spain; his sister, Rita and her husband, Ovila Cote; and his brother, Raymond Belanger and his wife, Cecile. He also leaves many nieces & nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Bernadette Elston, Juliette Smart and Irene Golden; brothers, Philippe Belanger, Edward E Belanger, and Bro. Joseph Belanger FMS.
ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 9, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, St. Theresa Church, Methuen, Mass.
