NORTH ANDOVER — Joseph J. Giacalone, 80, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2009 at Sutton Hill Health Care Center North Andover after a long hard fought battle with cancer.
He was born June 23, 1929 in Winchester, son of the late Frank and Virginia Giacalone. Joe attended Winchester High School, Columbia University and graduated from Boston University in 1955 with a B.S. and Masters degree in Geology. Joseph was a professor of Geology at MIT, Boston University and Salem State College as well as a consultant to many mining corporations throughout the world. Joseph was a veteran serving in the United States Army in Korea from 1947 to 1951.
Joseph will be missed by his wife of 54 years, Pauline (Borzi) Giacalone; his children, including his daughter Paula and son-in-law Paul Breeden of North Andover; his son Michael and daughter-in-law Paula (Foster) Giacalone of Gloucester, and his daughter-in-law Rosalie (Schiffer) Giacalone, wife of his late son Jon of North Andover. Joe also had eight grandchildren, Matthew Breeden, Jason and his wife Tiffany (Daigle) Breeden, Joshua Breeden and Joseph Giacalone all of North Andover, Lindsey Foster of Gloucester and Lauren (Foster) and husband James Ayube of Germany. Joseph was predeceased by Brother Andrew and Sister Lillian both of Winchester. He leaves behind surviving siblings and in-laws-in-brother Louis and his wife Mirella of Rome Italy; brother Frank of Winchester, brother Vito and his wife Pauline of Peabody, brother Dominic his wife Gina of Hartford Connecticut, brother Richard his wife Lorraine of Salem N.H.; and sisters, Elizabeth (Giacalone) Ferrina and Sara (Giacalone) Cefalo both of Winchester; sister Joanne (Giacalone) Milano her husband Joseph of Florida and brother-in-law Andrew and his wife Lucille (Borzi) Rossi of North Andover. Joe also leaves behind his Aunt Joan Nigro of Hamilton, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be offered on Thursday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at the Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third St. North Andover.
