Georgetown, MA — Dr. William J. Ryan Jr., 82, of Georgetown, Mass., passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 27, 2014. He was born in Beverly, Mass., to William J. Ryan and Mildred (Daly) Ryan. He attended Northeastern University after graduating from Beverly High School. He graduated as valedictorian from Massachusetts College of Optometry in 1955. Following graduation, he married his wife, Sylvia (Jensen) Ryan, and joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps, eventually leaving as a Captain. After the service, he practiced for 50 years as an optometrist in Haverhill, Mass. He was a member of the Haverhill Lions Club and a longtime member of the Mass Society of Optometrists. Upon retiring, he continued to enjoy his family and grandchildren, his model railroading and model shipbuilding. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, his children Dr. and Mrs. William J. Ryan III, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Ryan, and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Flynn, and their families.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call on Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Merton E. Roberts Jr. and Conte Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Georgetown, Mass.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Church in Georgetown. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem, Mass.
