Methuen — William J. McKay, 87, of Methuen, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 27, 2014, surrounded by family at his home. Bill was born in Dorchester, Mass., and was the son of the late Frederick and Grace (Taylor) McKay.
Bill enlisted in the Navy in December 1943, and served in the South Pacific, stationed in Guam until he was honorably discharged in August 1946. Upon his return, he attended college at Holy Cross and UMass Amherst, and was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Highway Department for nearly 40 years. Bill married Grace (Langille) McKay on July 8t, 195, they were married for 62 years. He is best remembered for his sense of humor, his entertaining (and often embellished) stories, and his deep love and affection for his family.
Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, Grace McKay of Methuen; and his children, William J. McKay Jr. and his wife, Maureen, of Derry, N.H., Karen M. Anderson and her husband, John, of Boxford, Mass., and Frederick D. McKay and his wife, Deborah, of Lawrence, Mas. Bill also leaves his six loving grandchildren, Sarah McKay, Jesse McKay, Katherine Anderson, Carl Anderson, Christopher McKay, and Marie McKay; as well as his one beloved, great-grandson, Jack McKay; and many nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends will be received at visiting hours on Friday, January 31, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. His Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, February 1, at 9:30 a.m., at St. Monica’s Church, 212 Lawrence St., Methuen. Burial will follow at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence.
