Formerly of Haverhill — Lillian Ruth Cohen, age 82, of Baldwinville, MA, died on Friday, March 14, 2014.
Born in Mendon, MA, on April 9, 1931, Lillian was the daughter of the late Solomon and Bessie (Valinsky) Smith.
A graduate of Milford High School in 1948 and Fisher Junior College in 1950, Lillian was one of the very first X-ray technicians at Faulkner Hospital, achieving the job of department Supervisor before marrying the love of her life, Norman N. Cohen on November 20, 1955. They spent the majority of their married life in Haverhill, MA before retiring to Londonderry, NH.
While a resident of Haverhill, Lillian was involved extensively with Temple Emanu-El, serving on several committees and as Vice-President of the Sisterhood. In this capacity, Lillian was given the honor of being one of the first group of women to receive an Aliyah at the synagogue, an honor she treasured. Lillian also found time to volunteer as a Girl Scout Leader. Lillian and Norman loved opera, ballet and symphony and would accompany each other or their children to these events.
She returned to work, after many years as a homemaker, as executive secretary for the American Heart Association Northeast office in Andover, MA. Once she and Norman retired to Londonderry, NH they spent many enjoyable hours together playing couples bridge and volunteering at Parkland Hospital. Lillian enjoyed participating in card groups, book clubs and theater groups and visiting family.
Lillian is survived by her children, Buffie Cohen and her husband, Mardy Murphy, of Providence, RI; Pamela and her husband, Steven Sloan, of Hillsborough, NJ and Joan Cohen-Mitchell and her husband, Timothy Cohen-Mitchell, of Greenbelt, MD. She also leaves to cherish her memory her grandchildren, Rachel Sloan of Wilimantic, CT, Heather Sloan of Hillsborough, NJ, Noah Cohen-Mitchell of Greenbelt, MD; her brother-in-law, Harry Schaechter of W. Hartford, CT; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
