Lawrence — Alice R. (Newton) Franz (94) of Lawrence, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at Mary Immaculate Nursing Home in Lawrence, MA. The daughter of Hammond and Catherine (Reynolds) Newton, Alice was a graduate of Lawrence High School and a lifelong member of the Dance Teacher's Club of Boston, Dance Educators of America, and Dance Masters of America. She was well known throughout the area; for over sixty years, she taught ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics, and ballroom dancing at the Alice Franz Dance Studio. She was also a dance instructor at St. Mary's High School, Presentation of Mary Academy, and Merrimack College. Wherever she went, former students and parents greeted her and recounted fond memories of dancing.
Alice's passions were her family, dancing, and Hampton Beach where she spent her summers.
The widow of Robert A. Franz, she is survived by her three sons, John T. Franz and wife, Jean, of Andover, MA; Thomas A. Franz and his wife, Diane (Ferraro), of Bradford, MA; and William T. Franz and wife, Donna (Maille), of Windham, NH; grandchildren, Robert, James, Michael, Matthew, Timothy, Lauren, and Emily; great-grandchildren, Jack, Olivia, Emma, Jacob, Chloe, Charles, and Henry; many nieces and nephews; and best friend, Carol Fugere. Alice was predeceased by her brothers, Hammond Newton, John Newton, and her companion John Buotte.
The Franz family sends special thanks to the staff and residents at Mary Immaculate Nursing Home who lovingly cared for Alice. Her family will miss her dearly.
